I first met Mr. Sterner when he participated in and received an award in a nationally sponsored competition for the use of photovoltaics in buildings. The competition was sponsored by the National Renewable Energy Lavatory (NREL) and organized by the AIA. Photovoltaics (PV) have been available for quite some time but only recently became available as a building material. Architects are the key to promoting the use of materials in the built environment and to aiding in the development of new products. Mr. Sterner proved himself to be adept at understanding the technical aspects of the material and has explored the design possibilities of PV quite extensively. He has continually strived to promote the use of photovoltaics in his building designs and has worked to educate his colleagues and clients.
